The two latest films of the Miu Miu Women’s Tales series – “In my Room”, directed by Mati Diop, and “Nightwalk” by Małgorzata Szumowska – were presented on September 6th at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Giornate degli Autori program. “In my Room” is a poem and a portrait about memory and forgetting, tenderness and cruelty, and the act of filming itself; “Nightwalk” achieves to be both a silent movie and a symphonic portrait of young people struggling against family and social expectations. It bristles with the electricity and excitement that accompanies self-discovery.
The screenings were followed, on the 7th and the 8th of September, by the traditional conversations, staging directors and actresses from hit TV series. As every year, British journalist Penny Martin, editor-in-chief of “The Gentlewoman”, moderated the talks, which addressed the following subjects:
- “Future Vistas: the directors visualising 21st-century hope”, with Mati Diop and Małgorzata Szumowska.
- “Breaking Ground: the next generation of women on screen”, with Emma Corrin, Francesca Hayward and Raffey Cassidy.
- “Fashioning Resistance: performance and representation now”, with Nathalie Emmanuel, Lyna Khoudri, Katherine Waterston.
- “Common Threads: female creativity on both sides of the lens”, with Mona Fastvold and Vanessa Kirby.
