The 2021 America’s Cup regattas will be sailed in a 75’ monohull. The concept for the craft was developed jointly by the design teams at Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa Challenge, with the aim of designing a new class of high-performance monohull yacht, AC75, cutting-edge and safe boats that are demanding to sail and which will reward and highlight the crews’ abilities.
The Class Rule will be published in detail by 31 March 2018, and the first AC75 boats will be launched from 31 March 2019 onwards.
Patrizio Bertelli, president of Luna Rossa Challenge, said: “Choosing a monohull yacht was an essential condition for us competing again in the America’s Cup. It does not mark a return to the past, but rather a step towards the future; indeed, the concept behind the new AC75 class will open up new horizons for competitive sailing, which, in the future, may also benefit leisure boating. It is a modern concept, challenging on a sporting level, which will create exciting and closely-fought head-to-head regattas”.
