The revolutionary fully foiling monohull AC75 Luna Rossa was launched on 2 October in Cagliari, the home of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team. The yacht will compete in the 36th America’s Cup, to be held in Auckland (New Zealand) from January to March 2021.
Once the boat had received a blessing from Monsignor Arrigo Miglio, Archbishop of Cagliari, Miuccia Prada, standing alongside Patrizio Bertelli, Marco Tronchetti Provera (CEO of Pirelli), Max Sirena (skipper and team director) and Agostino Randazzo (president of Circolo della Vela Sicilia), christened the boat by breaking a bottle of Ferrari Maximum Blanc de Blancs (the team’s official supplier) over its bow. The design and construction of Luna Rossa took over 90 people, including 37 designers, almost two years of research, testing and building, with a total of 78,000 hours worked. At the end of the ceremony, the Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte took time out from an official trip to Cagliari to visit the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli headquarters and the new yacht, and to talk to the crew and team members.
