Italiana, an exhibition at the Palazzo Reale in Milan curated by Maria Luisa Frisa and Stefano Tonchi, examines the crucial historical period of 1971 to 2001 from a fashion perspective, as well as looking at how the changes in the world of fashion and dress, and industry and society more generally, were reflected by the sector. The exhibition opened on 21 February to mark Milan Women’s Fashion Week, which Prada and Miu Miu attended with a with a selection of looks from their menswear and womenswear collections, as well as Prada’s iconic green canvas rucksack.
Italiana aims to highlight the progressive approach of the Italian fashion system during that period, when it was the flagbearer for the Italian lifestyle throughout the world. It was a charismatic era that cemented relationships and exchanges between the leading figures of a generation of Italian artists, architects, designers and intellectuals, who between them were able to change the course of international culture.
