A new 650 m2 Prada store has been unveiled in the Miami Design District. The shop opened during Art Basel Miami Beach 2017 and presents a unique interpretation of the brand’s retail spaces, forging a new visual identity.
Inspired by the city of Miami itself, and combining its distinctive art deco style with Latin American influences, the new furnishings embody the many contrasts and contradictions at the heart of Prada’s identity. The design is meticulous and familiar, influenced by classic 1960s modernism and the mixture of styles typical of Brazilian design, although retaining a Prada feel.
The concept aims to recreate a domestic setting, with original and unique furnishings created by leading Brazilian designers and architects, including Joaquim Tenreiro, the father of Brazilian design, Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, Jorge Zalszupin, José Zanine Caldas and Sérgio Rodrigues. The design is intimately connected to the surrounding environment, celebrating craftsmanship in an intimate and comfortable mood pervaded by a sense of reality.
The exterior, with its straight lines, reflects the precision and obsession of 1960s architecture, while inside the bas-relief walls evoke the ‘tropical deco’ aesthetics of old Miami Beach.
Designed as an unbroken whole, the furnishings are made of Brazilian rosewood, and each item of furniture is in itself significant and unconventional, turning the space into an evocative series of balanced and familiar home environments.
